The survey was conducted as oil market analysts predicted an average U.S. gas price of over $3 per gallon by summer. Almost 70 percent (69.8 percent) of those surveyed said that the rising gas prices at the pump would have a "major impact" on how they cast their vote.

The survey also asked who respondents felt was "most responsible" for the current gas price. Politicians (30 percent) ranked second behind oil companies (45 percent), with twice as many people blaming their elected representatives as oil producing countries (15 percent) for the current situation. Only nine percent of those questioned said that drivers held the most responsibility for the rising gas prices.

Four out of five of those surveyed said they believed that legislative changes could impact gas prices, with 39 percent saying that limits on oil company profits would have greatest impact.

Presented with a range of options, 26 percent said more subsidies for alternative energy sources would have the biggest effect on prices while cutting tax on gas was chosen by 14 percent and boosting domestic oil production was the choice of 20 percent.

The survey was conducted among 950 users of the BuyingAdvice.com Web site, which provides competitive new vehicle price quotes and auto buying tips to 50,000 consumers a month.
