Passion, Not Anger, Fuels Sox-Yankees Rivalry on SoxandPinstripes.com

Joe Torre recently told the media that Boston Red Sox fans are instilled with anger and resentment towards his New York Yankees. The longtime manager of the Bronx Bombers believes that is what fuels the rivalry. Passion, not anger, is what has catapulted the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry to an all-time high, Jeff Louderback believes. The fervor that Red Sox and Yankees fans share for their respective teams is what led Louderback to create Sox and Pinstripes (www.soxandpinstripes.com), a blog where readers discuss, debate and learn about all things Red Sox, Yankees and baseball.

Louderback, a professional freelance journalist and a lifelong Red Sox fan, introduced Sox and Pinstripes on February 25 with Vincent Mercandetti, a broadcast journalism student at Quinnipiac University (Hamden, Ct.) and a lifelong Yankees fan. The site - which features daily postings and an expansive assortment of links to Red Sox, Yankees and baseball web sites and blogs – has received 5,000 visitors in less than a month, reports Louderback, who attributes the immediate traffic to “the year-round baseball season” for Red Sox and Yankees fans.

“The Sox and Yankees were fierce rivals long before Joe Torre ever donned a Yankees uniform,” said Louderback, who serves as editor and chief Red Sox writer for Sox and Pinstripes. “The fact this represents the greatest rivalry in all of baseball – and arguably all of sports – has nothing to do with anger and resentment. It has everything to do with the passion demonstrated by Sox and Yankees fans alike.”

Louderback and Mercandetti write daily posts, to which readers are free to make comments. The site includes more than 275 links to web sites and blogs that detail news, history, features, and statistics related to the Red Sox, Yankees and baseball. Earlier this week, Louderback added the photography of Kelly O’Connor, who will post Red Sox and Yankees images. Sox and Pinstripes will also showcase Q&As with media members who cover the Red Sox and Yankees, profiles on top prospects with both teams, guest columns from journalists and bloggers, and Red Sox features written by Louderback, whose work appears in regional and national magazines.

“Yankees and Red Sox fans are not bashful about expressing their opinions, and for the most part, those comments indicate a high baseball IQ,” Louderback said. “We don’t always agree, but one thing is certain – we love the rivalry and the game.”
