UrbanPrestige.com Launches: Social Networking for Grown Ups

A recent report by comScore shows that more than half of MySpace users are over 35 years old. Is MySpace.com dynamic enough to support teenagers, and generation x? Although teenagers can use MySpace for discussing the latest episode of "The O.C." and sharing YouTube links, many members of generation x have not found their basic needs matched by the site.

I was struck by the utility of social networking sites. The ability to keep track of your friends, make new friends, and reconnect with people from your past was amazing.
Dr. Joseph Hathorn, founder of new social networking site Urban Prestige, recognized the need and stepped forward to give consumers over 25 a social networking resource that would be useful. According to Hathorn, "I was struck by the utility of social networking sites. The ability to keep track of your friends, make new friends, and reconnect with people from your past was amazing." Hathorn, who founded UrbanPrestige.com with his wife Dr. Eugenia Jacobs, wanted to launch a full-service social networking site for upwardly mobile professionals.

Dr. Jacobs describes Urban Prestige as, "MySpace and Friendster for grown-ups." Jacobs says, "I've always appreciated the need for professional networking, and I thought that sites like LinkedIn were onto something. I also realized that on the dating scene, professionals are looking for each other; they don't want to waste time on slackers. The next logical step was to combine the best features of professional and social networking on one site."

Jacobs and Hathorn have approached the phenomenon from an all inclusive perspective. Urban Prestige combines the three most hot-button elements of life for people between 25 and 55, relationships and
online dating, personal growth, and professional development. "It's the next generation of social networking," says Hathorn, "users are able to post the resumes, invite their friends to a cocktail party, and find work-out tips. The possibilities are endless."

Many of Urban Prestige's features have never had a home in an online community. Urban Prestige has recruited experts in each field to discuss the things that matter most to the upwardly-mobile urban professional. Urban Prestige hosts blogs and discussion groups that focus on topics like physical fitness (Shape UP), spirituality (Wake UP), and personal style (Style UP.)

Safety Features:

Alarmed by the constant media reports of predators targeting children online, the founders of Urban Prestige knew their site would be locked to anyone under 25. "The philosophy is simple," explains Hathorn, "teenagers aren't going to lie about their age, because our site isn't built for teenagers. I'm fairly confident no teenager will find professional networking and personal growth entertaining. On the flip-side it means our site will not be another resource for predators. We refuse to contribute to the already terrifying atmosphere that has been created by other social networks."

What about safety for those of us over 25, who might be wary about making new friends online? Urban Prestige offers features for us too:
dating tips for developing trust in a new relationship, while respecting your own safety, as well as the ability to block unwanted solicitation, or request that another user's profile be reviewed by management.

According to John Robbins, author of Healthy at 100, "it is not diet and exercise alone that help people to live well past one hundred. The quality of personal relationships is enormously important. Loneliness has more impact on life span than such known vices as smoking. There is clearly a strong beneficial power to love and connection."

In this day and age, when we find ourselves bogged down by all of our commitments, it's more important than ever to feel a strong sense of community. A sense of belonging is essential to health and well-being.

Urban Prestige is a forum in which adults can find meaningful professional and social connections. UP is not just a place in which to make personal and professional connections. UP is the long awaited recognition that successful individuals seek a balance in work, love, and play. UPł.

About Urban Prestige:

Urban Prestige is the first social networking site to encompass all aspects of your life, including work, play and love. Strengthen your overall well being with the most recent data, forums, and thought provoking writing from selected contributors in the areas of health and fitness, nutrition, spirituality, world affairs and sexuality. The key to happiness is a balance of good physical and mental health, satisfying relationships, and professional fulfillment.
