Start-Up Beats Google In Launching Pay-Per-Click Video Ads

Last week Google Inc. proudly announced they were planning to allow advertisers to place video ads on their vast network of websites later this week. The press across the world heralded the imminent arrival of Google into the TV Advertising arena and their invasion of the 60 billion plus cash cow of the big TV networks. Quietly under Google’s radar, a start-up in Florida launched their pay per click online video advertising network on May 16, 2006 disrupting Google ’s announcement to be the first and only company to take a slice of the pay-per-click video advertising pie.

On Wednesday night May 24, 2006 at 9:11 pm if you logged into your Google adwords account you may not have been able to buy video ad space. According to the company’s website video ads are currently available as part of a phased release for advertisers in a limited number of locations. On the other hand, if you visited Internet Television Channels.com you could purchase pay-per-click video ad space on 20 different channels from real estate to financial services and target users within those channels by keywords. According to Samuel Salter CEO of Internet Television Channels.com,” due to the completion of major distribution agreements you could reach over 40 million unique internet users across a number of highly popular websites”.

Does this small start –up have a chance to compete against Google who has a market valuation more than Time Warner and loads of cash? On the surface I guess not but remember just a scant 8 yrs ago Google was a start-up and no one thought they could complete against the likes of Yahoo, Microsoft and media giants like Time Warner.

Internet Television Channels.com is off to a good start. By going live before Google they have robbed Google the glory of being the first and only pay per click video advertising option.

There are other exciting differences between Internet Television Channels.com and Google’s video ad network. For one, Internet Television Channels.com does not plan to just broadcast video ads that are highly targeted to a large network of websites, but they will also broadcast Movies, TV programs and Music Videos as well. Advertisers have a choice of running a video ad solo or before video programming. “We plan to turn thousands of websites into an internet television channel in 15 minutes or less by providing websites not only with highly targeted video ads but movies and TV programs that match the content of the website. Visitors will stay at a website longer when there is video programming that matches the content of the site. It is win-win for the website publishers, film producers and web consumers. Think of us as an online video syndicator just like Kings World Productions is in the offline world.” says Samuel Salter CEO of Internet Television Channels.com.

The company has entered into an agreement to syndicate a short film called “Inevitable” directed by Salomon Gill of Filmaking.com. They also have attracted a little star power to their network they have an agreement to syndicate video content produced by MBK Entertainment the management company of Grammy Award winning artist Alicia Keys. As Salter likes to say, “This is “Hollyweb” baby.” The key differences between the Google Video ad network and Internet Television Channels.com do not stop there. Like Google, they host the video ad so the advertiser does not have to worry about streaming video services. But they also have partnered with producers around the country to create commercials from the mom and pop shops to the Fortune 500.

While Google video ads play on the publisher’s website after the user clicks a graphic display ad. Internet televison’s.com video ads and programs play silently without sound non-intrusively on the publisher’s website and underneath is a text description of the video. When the user clicks the text link, a page pop ups and the user experiences a video with sound that takes up half the screen. As an added bonus advertisers can put links to their site, banner ads and other information about their product or service on this page. Salter believes their network is not only for direct marketers, but also brand advertisers who are interested in pay for performance pre-roll video advertising opportunities.

“With our Videomatch technology we syndicate the right video to the right site with the right ad. Each click is a vote by web surfers. Programs and ads that are clicked more are played more and those that aren’t are played less.”

Google’s website has yet to have any information to assist advertisers on how to advertise and create online video campaigns, while Internet Television Channels website has loads of information on how to create compelling videos that generate sales. They even have a 16 page special report entitled is, “Online Video Advertising the Next Big Thing”, which shows advertisers how to profitably use online video advertising to achieve their ROI objectives. You can get the report by visiting

Salter is not suffering from delusions of grandeur and thinking they are going to be able to capture market share from Google without a fight. So to gain momentum and advertiser loyalty they are offering the first 20 advertisers that open an account on June 7th and June 8th a free test campaign valued at up to $5,000 and includes a free commercial if you don’t have one.

It sounds like these guys have thought about everything. But is it enough to be the leader in pay- per-click online video advertising over Google’s deep pockets and advertiser relationships which some say are over 100,000. Even Samuel Salter CEO of Internet Television Channels admires the company and wouldn’t mind working for them. “If we execute 25% as well as Google that would make us a 2 billion dollar company in 5 yrs, which is a very lofty goal so you have to admire them.”

This is a company worth watching and if I were Fox, CBS, Microsoft or Yahoo I would be giving Salter a call. Why let Google take the lions share of the online video advertising pie, a lot is at stake here. Television advertising is a 60 billion dollar a year business. Let’s see how this saga plays out. The battle has begun and the score is 2 for Internet Television Channels.com and 1 for Google. Who knows by next month the score could be 100 for Google and 2 for Internet Television Channels.com. Is Internet Television Channels.com the little train that could?
