Internet Scholastic Chess Champion Announced - Sponsored by World Chess Network and ChessCentral
July 15, 2005 -- The Internet Scholastic Chess Championship, with over $10,000 in prizes, trophies, and WCN memberships, began the qualifying rounds in April, 2005 on www.WorldChessNetwork.com with hundreds of students from around the world, in 2 divisions (ages 5-9 and 10-16). The final rounds were held July 8th through the 10th at Harrah's Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, where 14 kids from the United States and Canada came together to vie for the title of Internet Scholastic Champion.
In the 5 - 9 age group the First Place winner was 9 year old Daniel Naroditsky from the U.S.A., who earned $2,000.00 for his efforts. Placing second was Nikolas Orlov, who won $1,000.00. In the 10 - 16 age group Daniel Kazmaier and Max Enkin finished first and second, respectively. All of the Las Vegas Finalists received a minimum of $300.00 in cash for their efforts and each competitor also received prizes of chess merchandise from www.ChessCentral.com.
"All of us at WCN were extremely pleased with the success of our inaugural Internet Scholastic Chess Championship (ISCC)! All of the participants, parents, coaches, and friends seemed to really enjoy the venue, the competition and the fun! I have never seen a tournament where the kids competed so hard, yet made wonderful friends with the other competitors. The quality of chess was excellent, but it was the true spirit of sportsmanship which the children displayed that really stood out to me. It was a great tribute to late Dato Arthur Tan Boon Shih and an event that we feel will get bigger and better each year!" said Patrick J. Connoy, the CEO of WCN.
Mr. Conway presented the trophies and prizes to the winners. Trophies were generously donated by The House of Staunton, while the finalists received participation certificates and cash prizes provided by WCN. All of the chess sets, chess boards, and chess clocks used in this tournament were donated by www.ChessCentral.com, the Internet's leading chess shop for players of all ages. This tournament was organized in the memory of the late Dato Arthur Tan Boon Shih, the son of Dato Tan Chin Nam the former Deputy President of the International Chess Federation and a patron of chess throughout the globe. Dato Arthur Tan Boon Shih was well known world-wide for his public service, who quietly contributed to boating and chess at Geelong Grammar in Australia, and donating art masterpieces from his own collection to the Art Foundation of Victoria, also in Australia.
Chess is one of the few games children really enjoy and benefit from. Leopold Lacrimosa, a noted student chess coach, states that “When a child takes up chess, he begins to develop logical thinking, critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, as well as mathematical skills such as algebra and geometry.”
