Satirical Web Site Rumandmonkey.com Celebrates Two And a Half Years, Half a Billion Hits
The satirical website Rum and Monkey (rumandmonkey.com) has been active for two and a half years this month – and in that time has attracted around half a billion hits, spending less than $50 on marketing. The website, which was one of the pioneers of the humorous personality test, has also been featured on CourtTV (for its 'Which Evil Criminal Are You?' test) and in many newspapers and magazines across the world.
The website was briefly advertised on weblogs such as MetaFilter; however, the site has an enormous grass roots popularity that has enabled it to carry on. Initially started as a side product by four university students, the founders have now all graduated but continue to run the site. Thousands of people come back every day to visit the cartoons, web toys and discussion forums, which all have an independent, underground attitude. Which is not to say they are amateur; Rum and Monkey contributors hail from all over the world, and include well regarded published columnists and authors. Rum and Monkey articles have been favorably compared to those in The Onion and McSweeney's.
The team has also created viral web projects for outside interests, such as tests for successful authors, educators and nightclubs. They continue to offer this service, and the personality tests they create usually reach a minimum of hundreds of millions of hits. Their specialty is in producing witty text content in conjunction with attractive imagery which users are encouraged to paste on their own websites and journals, creating a low cost "word of mouth" marketing explosion.
About Rum and Monkey Rum and Monkey was founded in January 2002 by four students at the University of Edinburgh. Its mix of cartoons, web toys, satirical articles and personality tests has subsequently received both critical and popular acclaim; the website currently receives an average of half a million hits a day, and growing.
