Yachtmama.com LLC, A leader in the yacht sales and information distribution services industry is taking the lead in providing wireless networking capabilities for the Marina environment. The product offering called "YachtSpot" [http://www.yachtspot.netis the first WIFI offering by a marine industry agency providing 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g wireless public hotspots at marinas, industry tradeshows and boat shows across the country.
YachtSpot hotspots are fast growing technologies riding on the consumer demand for public Internet access. The product was originally developed for the use in weather intensive marina environments and has been adopted by the private sector. Trend setting entrepreneurs are deploying the YachtSpot solution in apartment buildings, coffee shops, parks and café environments. “A wireless hotspot does not take vast amounts of technical experience or maintenance” chimes Schaefer, “and the return on investment is extremely high with competition being very low.” YachtSpot allows for the owner to control and collect 100% which makes this solution unique in the wifi deployment arena.
The YachtSpot service was offered in limited mooring areas of New York City last year. But beginning May 1st, YachtSpot said boaters will be able to access wireless fidelity, or wi-fi in 2 locations on the East River in Manhattan.
The locations will allow boaters and users of laptop computers, or other wireless Internet access devices, to tap into the Internet at speeds comparable to high-speed broadband connections offered in offices and homes, said YachtSpot Director Jack Schaefer. YachtSpot is providing the wi-fi service at the two waterfront locations on the Eastside of Manhattan.
The technology and installation for the wi-fi service will be capable of handling 250 users at distances of 500 meters from the antenna location.
“Demand for the YachtSpot has been tremendous”, stated Jack Schaefer, YachtSpots developer , “ it is great to introduce an affordable and easily deployable wireless solution for the convenience of mobile users. Our growing deployment effectively represents the user demands for true mobility and wireless freedom.”
YachtSpot uses radio technology that is low-energy, highly robust, and operates in the unlicensed, 2.4 GHz radio spectrum, ensuring communication compatibility worldwide.
Current market reports state that the projected number of hot spots will reach 580,000 access points in North America by 2007 up from 90,000 by the end 2003.
With the installation of YachtSpot components there is no need to conceal cables in the wall, ceiling, or floor to provide a wifi service which makes it ideal outside networks. The hardware consists of plug and play devices which arrive configured and ready for use. Marinas and local establishments simply connect the YachtSpot into a cable, satellite or dsl modem for an instant hotspot. YachtSpot control software is required to manage users and accounts but is not needed for basic deployment.
