This Mother’s Day, One Mom Offers Help About Parenting a Teenager to Other Anxiety

When the parent-teen battles began in her house, Sue Blaney began doubting her parenting a teenager skills. Not one to avoid a challenge, she formed a discussion and learning group with six other moms in her area. And when other parents who heard about the success of the group started asking for details, Blaney decided to create a parent teeanger guide that anyone could use. Blaney’s book, Please Stop the Rollercoaster! How Parents of Teenagers Can Smooth Out the Ride is a tool available to all moms (and dads). Grounded in research and hands-on in its approach, this unique book guides parents of typical teens to examine the range of issues they are likely to face. Moms and dads across the country are using it to explore this dynamic experience, and many are using the book as a guide for self-directed parenting discussion groups, http://www.pleasestoptherollercoaster.com/index.htm

According to Blaney, “Parents of teenagers are too frequently isolated and unsure of the ‘rules’ in raising teens.” She says discussion with other parents helps to ease stress while parents gain confidence in their changing role. Whether readers elect to join a discussion group or read and use this workbook on their own, she encourages them to spend time discussing the issues with their peers. Recognizing parents’ lack of free time, the book has a “Readers Digest-like” approach. Each topic’s coverage is succinct and informational, often including quotes from major authorities. It guides parents to clarify strategies that will fit in with their beliefs and values.

A comprehensive website supports ongoing parent teenager communication and provides targeted information for parents of teenagers, educators, guidance counselors and others who work with parents and teens. People are invited to sign up for a free monthly e-newsletter containing articles, interviews and tips for parents of teens at the website. .http://www.pleasestoptherollercoaster.com/Parent-teenager-issues.htm

On the website Blaney also publishes selected works from teenagers themselves that offer parents insight into the teens’ world.

Available nationwide in book stores and online, Please Stop the Rollercoaster! How Parents of Teenagers Can Smooth Out the Ride has been the foundation for parenting discussion groups launched among friends, promoted by middle and high schools, and church groups. Blaney estimates several hundred parents have used the guide in groups, and she is aware of numerous communities working the program into their fall plans. In demand as a speaker, Blaney’s goal is to help parents discover what they can do to “smooth out their ride” as they learn to be more constructive in their words and actions.
