Powered by strong values, extensive retail and Internet experience, and — best-of-all — owner Adena Surabian’s grandfather (Lou Wolvek), Safe & Secure Baby™ has grown from a garage-front fantasy to a leader in the child safety industry.
In 2001, Lou (age 84) and wife Claire (age 75) reluctantly walked away from their food service business at the Las Vegas Union Plaza Hotel to join their family in Southern California. What looked like a sure recipe for boredom, however, turned out to be a blessing of renewed passion and good health. Orphaned in Russia at an early age, Lou had come to the United States, where his career took him from jockey to professional dancer to jean manufacturer. (Rumor has it, we can catch glimpses of Lou’s footwork in several of Gene Kelly films.)
As Lou, a diabetic, took an increasingly active role in his granddaughter’s growing business, his spirit and his health improved dramatically. Today, Lou can be found spreading goodwill throughout the Safe & Secure Baby™ warehouse and single-handedly dispatching up to 400 packages per week. His enthusiasm and caring nature continue to shape the bright, customer-focused reputation of Safe & Secure Baby™.
And none of this could have been achieved without the constant companionship of Claire, who assists Lou in his daily rounds — and, so I’ve heard, makes Adena’s lunch every day! What could be sweeter?
