New company Pret-á-Web was established to provide a much needed low cost service that builds customised do-it-yourself maintenance websites for small business and community groups. The aim is to give website control and management back to the owner without the need to learn complex HTML code. This means website owners are not at the mercy of expensive consultants who charge a lot just to change simple content on a website.
Pret-á-Web uses Plone - a new leading open source Content Management System. Plone technology is not a propriety system, this means users are not locked into one service provider nor do they need to pay huge amounts for software. In fact Plone is free to use.
The service provided is relatively cheap and can work for any business or organisation no matter where they are located in the world. This is possible as Pret-á-Web uniquely offers off-shore rates by working remotely. They operate in close consultation with clients all via the Internet using email and Netmeeting. To their credit, Pret-á-Web believes in making the client completely self-sufficient so they include in their service a training session and a tailor-made, step by step reference manual.
In today’s competitive Internet marketplace it's vitally important to regularly update and change websites to leverage the investment spent on Internet presence. Frequently updated information: keeps customers coming back, gives customers up-to-date information, not stale information and presents the business/organise as responsive and open for operation.
In the past this has been technically difficult or costly because of consultant fees. Pret-á-Web hopes to solve this problem. Founder Virginia Choy explains, "I've assisted many community groups and small businesses who have basically been ripped off by website consultants. They charge huge amounts to set the website up for the organisation then leave them with a site they can't update. Simple changes needs return visits from the consultant who leaves an exorbitant bill. Many organisations just can't afford the cost. Keeping website content fresh is critical in these competitive times. We decided to provide a service where the confusion and cost is taken out of creating a website."
Pret-á-Web is a small company wanting to make the Internet work for other small organisations or businesses no matter what budget or level of technical skill.
